RWJF funds an array of solicited and unsolicited projects.
Research grants account for roughly 20 percent of Foundation awards.
Projects are quite diverse, ranging from small, quick-strike targeted
research studies that inform the strategic direction of our grantmaking
to more elaborate research-driven demonstrations. View
an outline of our different research categories.
Both Solicited and Unsolicited Projects: The
Foundation funds both unsolicited and solicited research and evaluation
proposals. Some are part of RWJF’s organized national programs.
Others receive funding on an ad hoc basis. View
a list of programs. While the Foundation welcomes unsolicited
research ideas, those not directly linked to our priorities will
be funded only if they represent an unusual opportunity to advance
our mission. RWJF reviews all projects for the quality of the research
questions posed, the feasibility of the proposed design and the
value of the grant given the proposed budget. RWJF often asks external
experts to review projects as part of our proposal review process.
No Biomedical or International Research: The
Foundation typically does not fund international research, nor
does it support biomedical research.
