The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has been producing grant results reports on its funded initiatives since 1996. This work is accomplished through the Grant Results Reporting Unit, a joint effort of the Foundation's Communications and Research & Evaluation departments. Grant Results reports increase the transparency of RWJF's funding and promote learning from past work.
The Grant Results Reporting Unit is run by two co-coordinators, a former evaluator and a former journalist. Once a project or program is completed, an external writer reviews reports and publications from the initiative and interviews its project director and, if appropriate, RWJF's program officers and evaluation staff, to glean lessons from the work and to illuminate important aspects of project accomplishments (or the lack thereof).
When the writer has drafted a report, an external editor reads the entire file to be certain that the writer has accurately described the program and edits the report accordingly. One of the two coordinators then reviews each report, followed by the program officer and finally by the director of the initiative. Any of the reviewers in the chain may ask for changes in the report to improve clarity or accuracy. Every report is copy edited before it is posted online .
